The beta test of PlayStation Home seems to be going well, with more than seven million people accessing the service since the beta was launched seven months ago. Interestingly, three million of those are in Europe, raising the question of whether it's going to go over better oversas than here. Meanwhile, one of Sony's signature titles is going the cross-media route: Novels based on God of War are scheduled to be released next year.

Nintendo is beefing up its Japanese streaming video service with content from Warner Entertainment, including movies and anime. It's still in beta there, but if it goes over well, expect it to roll out here, whcih will give every one of the consoles some sort of streaming video service.

Funcom said it is not ruling out making the new Age of Conan game a free-to-play, showing that they're not giving up on the title yet – and it may be a sound marketing strategy, especially if they eventually move to a tiered gaming level where additional features can be unlocked via subscription. (And if they sell virtual goods? Even better, given how lucrative those are).

Economics/Geekonomics

Technology

Chasing Apple: A look at the app stores being set up by competing smartphone companies, showing just how much opportunity there is to get into this market. (Again, don't expect to get rich, but it could help you enhance your professional reputation). And in related stories, big game companies are now going head to head with upstarts in the iPhone game development wars, and netbook titan Acer is rumored to be launching an Andoid phone this fall. (Given that they already announced an Android netbook, that's no big surprise).

Google Voice rolls out: So far, the service is available for Android and Blackberry phones. It lets you hook multiple phone numbers to the same ID, so that no matter where you're calling from, it looks like it came from the same number – for instance, if you're working from home, you can call a business client and have it show up on their caller ID as your business phone. The service could prove useful to on-the-go professionals.

Anime/Manga

Publishing

The struggling New York Times is still taking measures to stay afloat, selling off its classical music station for $45 million after selling a lot of its real estate. Meanwhile, Gannett had a surprise profitable second quarter, despite a drop in ad revenues. The big companies are continuing to struggle and flounder, and will probably land on their feet eventually, if they embrace the new media model – they just may have a rough time getting there.
