Do you hate writing resumes? Yeah, me too. But even if you don’t think the process is fun, there are ways to break out of the anxiety and writer’s block. I recommend starting with a fake “practice” resume.
Pick your favourite fictional character. It should be someone you know really well and who you enjoy thinking about. Then… write a resume for them. This is the perfect warm-up exercise for writing your real resume because:
-It breaks the inertia of not writing.
-It can trigger ideas for things about yourself that you may not have thought to include.
-It’s fun so it takes the edge off the nervousness.
-You’re making your template, so you don’t have to worry about formatting when you get to the real resume.
-When you’re done, you have a new piece of creative writing done too.
One last suggestion: Have your character apply for a “real world” job instead of one from their world. They probably already fit perfectly into their job from their own world – something about being the Chosen One. Lucky for them. But having, say, Snake from Metal Gear Solid apply to be an executive assistant gets you into the right state of mind. Refer to past experiences and current skills, and describe them as though they make your character absolutely perfect for the job. Then, do it over again while talking about yourself.
